What you need:

  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups of flour
  • 1/2 cup of water

To make the salt dough:

  1. Mix together the flour and salt, gradually add the water stirring the mixture until it binds together into a dough.
  2. If it appears to be too sticky, add some extra flour. If it is too dry add extra water.
  3. Knead until the dough becomes a similar consistency to play-dough.
  4. Cook in an oven at a low heat (around 90-100 degrees Celsius) for between 2-3 hours - this may need to be increased for larger model.

Remember to add holes to models if you are wanting to hang them before the cooking stage!

The dough is then ready to be made into whatever shape you decide. This could include using Christmas shaped cutters, animal play-dough cutters or used to make letters or numbers.

Ways to decorate the cooked salt dough:

  • paint using bright ready mix colours or metallic paint for some extra shine

  • varnish using PVA glue then sprinkle with glitter (or use glitter glue)

  • make coloured salt dough by adding food colouring (or paint) to the dough before cooking
