Make some valentine's themed Playdough and decorate with lots of hearts and sparkles!

Both of the girls loved our valentine's playdough, Ava mainly because it was pink and Olivia enjoyed picking up all the little sequins and pushing them into the dough. The playdough encouraged some imaginative play as A made 'pink milk shakes' by cutting out heart shapes from the dough and pushing in pipe cleaners for straws!

What we used:

playdough ingredients:

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1/2 to one cup of boiling water
  • red food colouring, pink powder paint (for colouring the dough)

  • heart confetti

  • pink and red stars, sequins, Poms poms
  • red glitter
  • red pipe cleaners

How this activity can support development?

Playing with the dough helps children develop fine manipulative skills as they squeeze, roll and handle the dough. The valentine's theme helps children learn about traditions and provides an opportunity to talk about feelings towards others. Adding the confetti, glitter and sequins allows children to develop creativity as they make choices about how to decorate the dough and play with it imaginatively.
