Explore 'under the sea' by creating a small world water scene.

After our beach visit and sand dough last week, we have been exploring creatures that live under the sea. We made a small world water scene by lining a tub with sand and shells and then filling it up with some blue water before adding our creatures. The girls liked hiding the creatures underneath the surface and burying them into the sand at the bottom. There was lots of imaginative play which included a fish swimming away from a naughty crab who liked to pinch everyone!

What we used:

  • water
  • blue food colouring
  • under the sea small world toys (we bought them from this ebay seller)
  • sand
  • an assortment of shells and stones

What children may learn through this activity:

  • learn the names of creatures which live under the sea
  • discover more about the natural environment
  • develop imagination
  • discover different textures- water, shells, wet sand
