Small World Santa's Grotto

Create a small world Christmas scene for lots of small world imaginative play based on children's interest and excitement at Christmas time!

With all the boxes we've had arriving recently (I'm a bit a fan of online Christmas shopping!), I thought we'd make a new small world scene. Since visiting Father Christmas at the weekend a lot of playing in our house has involved visiting grotto's so this seemed the perfect thing to make!

What you need:

  • cardboard boxes (one smaller box to be the actual grotto)
  • paint
  • glitter
  • small world characters
  • Christmas decorations

We painted the box white and red and then it got generously covered in glitter. Once this was dry we used some Christmas sponges to add some stars, Christmas stockings and Christmas trees. We then made a grotto using the smaller box and painted and decorated this before placing inside the larger box.

This activity is good for children remembering and retelling events from their own experiences, making up stories and developing imaginative play.
