Explore bringing the story 'The Paper Bag Princess' to life with these fun Princess Activities!

Welcome to the first Poppins Book Nook post - a virtual book club for children's books! This month's theme is Princesses, Knights and Castles and we read the book The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch.

The Paper Bag Princess is a modern day story of a princess who sets out to rescue her kidnapped prince wearing a paper bag as a dragon burns down her castle and all her belongings! She outwits the dragon and saves the prince before realising that he isn't a very nice person after all and changes her mind about marrying him!

We started off by making a paper bag dress for one of my daughter's soft toy princesses as she wanted to re-enact the story (and of course she had to have a paper bag dress!). My little girl decided that she wanted to make the dress a bit more sparkly for Princess Elizabeth and jazzed the paper bag up with a few stickers and some pens. She then started to retell the story and declared that she NEEDED a dragon! We then set out making a dragon using a cardboard tube and lots of green paints, paper and sequins.

What we used:

  • paper bag
  • sparkly foam stickers
  • soft toy princess (any doll or soft toy could be used as a princess!)
  • cardboard tube
  • green paint
  • glue
  • green sequins
  • strips of red/yellow/orange tissue paper
  • googly eyes

This activity promotes:

  • enjoying books and stories
  • bringing stories to life
  • re-enacting and recalling key parts of a story
  • imagination
  • hand-eye coordination
  • fine motor skills
  • exploring and using language

To continue with the princess theme we also explored a princess sensory / smallworld tub which little sister could join in with too!

In our sensory tub we used:

  • pink salt
  • sequins
  • glitter
  • beads
  • sparkly gems
  • princess small world characters and props
